A great way to have fun and stay on a budget is by having family game nights. There are so many great family games to play together you won’t get bored anytime soon.

Family game nights are also a great way to bond and many games can help teach kids useful skills. There are a lot of classic games to choose from as well as new, indie games that are a lot of fun.

We have a huge game collection in my home and game nights happen often. When I was a kid my family also had a big game collection and enjoyed family game nights and my best friend and I played board games almost every time we were together.

Let’s dive in and take a look at some classic family games as well as some that are sure to be new family-favorites for your upcoming game nights.

The Best Fun Family Games to Play

To create this list I took a lot at my game closet and also asked my extended family about their favorite family-friendly board games. We are a board game family so we were able to come up with some great suggestions.

Classic Board Games

When first building your game collection be sure to include the classics like-

  • Monopoly
  • Scrabble
  • Checkers
  • Trivial Pursuit
  • Clue
  • Guess Who
  • Battleship
  • Sorry
  • Game of Life
  • Uno
  • Dominoes
  • Candyland
  • Jenga
  • Mancala
  • Yahtzee

Other Family Favorite Board Games

These are some games you may not have played before that are great additions to your collection as well.

  • Life on the Farm– This game is a bit like Life but you have a farm. It was one of my family’s favorites when I was a kid.
  • Hi-Ho! Cherry-O – This is perfect for families with younger kids. It’s a counting game and super cute.
  • Aggravation – This is a game that combines strategy and chance and is perfect for many ages.
  • Disney Chronology – This is one of my personal favorites and great for any Disney family. It a Disney movie trivia game where you try to put movies in chronological order.
  • Exploding Kittens – This game is fun and a little silly. It’s a card game and perfect for older kids.
  • Monopoly Expansions – Monopoly has made expansion packs that add new game play to the classic game without requiring a new board!
  • Pass the Pigs – This is a fun dice like game but you are rolling pigs.
  • Scattergories – This is a fun game where you try to make as many words for a letter as you can using different categories.
  • Cranium – This is a fun very interactive game, there is sketching, acting, humming, sculpting, picture-puzzling, and wordunscrambling.
  • Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza – This game sounds silly but it’s a lot of fun. It’s a fast paced card game a bit like Slap Jack.
  • Wavelength – Wavelength is a party game where two teams compete to read each other’s minds.
  • Murdle – This is a fun game where you use clues to solve a murder.
  • Cards Against Humanity Family Edition – This is the family-friendly version of the highly popular fill-in-the-blank party game.
  • Stratego – This is a classic battlefield strategy game that is fun to take turns playing.

Don’t rush to build your collection but slowly add to it over the years. My family gets a new game every Christmas or if we see a fun one on sale. It doesn’t take long for your collection to build.

Bonus Tip: Check thrift stores and garage sales for board games. You can often find games that were hardly even played for really cheap.
